Tub and tile reglazing.

There are three ways to renew your bathtub and tile - replacement, liners or reglazing.

Replacement:

With prices ranging from $10,000 - $20,000 and even more for a new bathtub and tile, and $2,000 - $5,000 for a just a new tub, replacing is the most expensive and time-consuming process.  Why is tub replacement so expensive when you can buy a tub at a discount hardware store for $350?   First of all, a $350 tub is cheaply made.  Its porcelain veneer is thin and weak, causing it to chip and rust easily and making it difficult to keep clean.  The big cost is in the labor to remove, discard and replace the tub.  Also, a few rows of tile have to be removed when replacing a tub, which can lead to other more costly repairs.

Liners:

When new, liners look nice and only take 1 –2 days to install with no demolition required.  Since the cost of liners is close to replacement, the fact that there is no demolition is a plus.  However, liners can look dingy after some time with improper cleaning.  Also, the biggest problem is water getting in the seams and collecting between the old tub and liner.  The best way to treat this is to remove the liner, dry the water, clean the mold and reattach the tub if it wasn’t damaged by removal.  This service is usually not warranted.  The liner salespeople will tell you how thick liners are, but remember that your tub is molded to fit and the part you stand on is always thinner, giving it that weak, spongy feel.  Also, some tubs cannot be fit with a liner.

Reglazing:

The reglazing of bathtubs and tile has come a long way.  Reglazers in the past have used many different coatings, with some lasting for a long time and some not.  Still, with the average price around $350, you can get several tubs reglazed to one replacement or liner.

The best reglazers use an epoxy primer for the bottom coats and an acrylic for the topcoats.  This is how Designer Tub & Tile works.  Some reglazers use epoxies only, or enamels or car paint.  While some of these coatings are O.K., others are very inferior and possibly illegal to use inside a house.  Our goal at Designer Tub & Tile is to provide you with a beautiful, glossy, like-new tub and tile that will give you many years of use.  The combination of the durable epoxy primer under the high gloss acrylic makes the process the best on the market today.
